Rally Obedience

Rally is a sport in which the dog and handler complete an obstacle course of sorts, using marked stations to practice various obedience skills. The dog / handler team proceed at their own pace through the course completing each skill for points. Speed of completion is secondary to precision on the course. Each week offers a new course, with a few novel skills.

The team moves at a brisk, but normal, pace with the dog under control at the handler's left side. The dog and handler should work together to follow the course in numerical order with a loose leash. Signs may include skills such as: Down – handler walk around dog, Weave around a series of cones, Front and dog go around handler, among other cues.

Handlers are encouraged to talk to their dogs throughout the course, use praise, hand clapping, verbal cues, hand gestures and signals. Repeating cues or signals is not penalized.

Penalties are given for sharp leash corrections, loud, harsh verbal corrections, yelling at the dog, or touching the dog.

Rally promotes fun and enjoyment for dogs and handlers at all levels, and is a great way to keep basic skills sharp.
